Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Somerville celebrates its 95th Anniversary
Friday, November 04, 2011 On August 6, 1916, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Somerville, Massachusetts was established, and on October 29, 2011
the parish celebrated its 95th Anniversary with a gala event at the
Museum of Fine Arts. Over 300 participants attended (despite the stormy
weather) to share memories and stories, as well as to rekindle
friendships established at the Dormition Church. A special guest of the
evening was Bishop John of Amorion, who was raised in Somerville and
who would later have the honor of serving the church as its pastor
nearly forty years ago. In his comments, Bishop John was overcome with
emotion as he reflected on the immense sacrifice his parents made, as
well as what it meant to be home again.
Speaking
to the attendees, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios reflected on the
rich history of the parish, as well as his personal memories. He shared
how, as a young seminarian, he would often go to the Dormition Church
to assist (and learn from) the late Father George Tsoumas with the
Divine Services. Father Tsoumas would not only serve the parish with
distinction, but he was also one the great deans of the Holy Cross Greek
Orthodox School of Theology. Indeed, honoring the pious generations
who have come before us and sacrificed was a shared theme of His
Eminence's moving words.
The evening was memorable for everyone who attended.
Our site also features in our Digital Photo Gallery a vast collection of photographs from parish visitis, liturgical celebrations, and various ministriy gatherings from all over the Metropolis of Boston.
