"Embracing the Children" Program Allows Campers to Shine Throughout Summer Season
Wednesday, July 21, 2010During his weekly visits to the St. Methodios Faith & Heritage Center, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios has had the opportunity to talk with the campers and observe the well organized and supervised programs. These include workshops, athletics, fun games, water activities, and evening campfire gathering by the lake where campers share their thoughts and feelings. All sessions have been filled and, as the Summer 2010 Camping Season approaches its conclusion on August 8, campers are as enthusiastic as ever, not only for the 2011 Summer Program, but also for the 2011 Winter and Family Camp Sessions. All sessions are open to children with special needs under the "Embracing the Children" Program. As such, these campers are integrated fully into the camp program which provides two counselors per camper with additional staff always available for special activities as needed. One member of the training staff holds a master’s degree in Moderate Special Needs from Boston College and is at the camp for every session. Throughout the years, it has been heartening to observe that special needs campers have the same enthusiasm and thirst to learn and to enjoy all camping activities.
