Metroolitan Methodios at Boston's Walk for Hunger
Tuesday, May 04, 2010At 7:00 am on Sunday, May 2 Metropolitan Methodios joined Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Project Bread Executive Director Ellen Parker to begin the Annual Walk for Hunger in Boston Common. More than 42,000 walkers joined together to walk 20 miles raising funds to stamp out hunger in Massachusetts. His Eminence spoke to the gathered press, listen to Mayor Menino explain the water crises in the Boston Metropolitan area (a broken pipe necessitated a ban on tap water for three days in 36 communities which were told to boil the water in order to drink it), thanked Ellen Parker and her staff for their dedication to the Walk and all outreach activities of Project Bread and enthused the walkers. Metropolitan Methodios then, along with the Chancellor of the Metropolis, Fr. Theodore J. Barbas and Deacon Evagoras Constantinides left Boston Common and drove to Manchester, NH where he presided at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at St. George Cathedral.
Also at 7 am the same morning, a group of young people organized by the Metropolis Youth Director Dino Pappas began their day to walk by attending the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral Chapel in Brookline. Fr. Alex Chetsas, the Assistant Pastor of the St. Demetrios Church in Weston, MA celebrated the early Divine Liturgy where, as one walker remarked "the young people receive the gift of love before they went on to offer their gift of love at the Walk. Project Bread offers an annual grant to the Philoxenia House of the Metropolis in recognition of the importance of this unique outreach ministry which Metropolitan Methodios established 24 years ago.
