Mission Service Trips
Wednesday, December 31, 1969
Saints Constantine and Helen Church in Webster, under the guidance of Fr. Luke Veronis, has led nine different mission trips to Project Mexico over the past 15 years. St. Spyridon Cathedral in Worcester under Fr. Dimitrios Moraitis, and St. Athanasios Church in Arlington, under Fr. Aaron Walker have also led various mission teams. Each year, Sts. Constantine and Helen Chruch has taken between 8 and 28 volunteers (more than 100 different volunteers have participated, mostly from the Webster church, but the teams have included teens from Worcester, Springfield, East Longmeadow, Andover, as well as a few non-Orthodox teens). Not only teenagers, but a number of parents and other adults, including parish council members have participated and been profoundly touched by the experience.
Project Mexico is a dynamic pan-Orthodox service project in Tijuana, Mexico where typically 600 Orthodox Christian volunteers from around the USA travel for one week; stay at St Innocent Orphanage; and build a simple home for a needy family. The life-changing experience touches everyone who goes, because it exposes people to life in the developing world; helps them understand the challenges of poverty that face the majority of the world; introduces them to the orphan boys at St. Innocent, while teaches a very profound and practical way of understanding and living our Orthodox Christian Faith. Participation on these trips has touched and changed the lives of numerous people. One example is how two young women from Sts. Constantine and Helen Church had gone to Project Mexico four times as teenagers and then served two summers as interns, helping to oversee the guidance of all the volunteers and the construction of 25 homes each summer. From that experience, these women decided to do a GAP Year of Service following high school, where they served in orphanages, schools, in building projects, and soup kitchens around the world. Other participants have been so touched by going to Mexico that they came home and became much more involved in volunteering and doing service projects locally. One fruit of Project Mexico has been Sts. Constantine and Helen’s Living Bread Luncheon, a free monthly meal that serves between 80-100 people on the first Saturday of every month in Webster. This local outreach came about as a result of Project Mexico.
Thank you for your interest and support of the Metropolis of Boston Mission Trip Ministry! Every year the Metropolis of Boston offers a Mission Service Trips as part of its outreach ministry program. These trips are open to all Greek Orthodox Youth and Young Adults ages. They are a great opportunity for the young adults of the Metropolis of Boston to help those individuals who are in need.
